Game Instructions (Read Aloud)

We’re going to play a game called Boppity Bop Bop! For starters, everyone gathers in a circle. Then, one player is chosen to start the game as  “It” and will stand in the middle of the circle. The game begins as “It” walks up to or points to another player and says, “Boppity Bop Bop Bop.” The other player must say “Bop” before “It” finishes saying “Boppity Bop Bop Bop” or they switch places with “It.” If the other player does say “Bop” first, “It” must move on to another player for the moment. “It” can attempt to fake out other players by simply saying “Bop” instead of “Boppity”. If the other player says “Bop” in response to a fake-out attempt of “Bop,” the players switch places. However, once “It” has said “Boppity” in full, this is considered an attempt to get the other player out. All disputes will be settled with a quick game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. The game will continue as long as time permits.

Detailed Instructions

  1. Ask everyone to gather in a circle.
  2. Choose one player to start the game as “It” by whatever means you prefer.
  3. “It” begins the game by walking up to or pointing to another player and saying “Boppity Bop Bop Bop.”
  4. The other player must say “Bop” before “It” completes the phrase “Boppity Bop Bop Bop.”
  5. If the other player says “Bop” first, “It” must move on to another player for the moment.
  6. If “It” finishes saying “Boppity Bop Bop Bop” before the other player responds with “Bop,” then they trade places in the circle, and the other player becomes “It.”
  7. “It” can try to fool players by only saying “Bop.”
  8. If the other player responds by saying “Bop” when “It” hasn’t yet begun saying “Boppity Bop Bop Bop,” then the players switch places.
  9. “It” can attempt to fake out players into prematurely saying “Bop” by only saying “Bop” themselves.
  10. “It” can also quickly move or point to another player and say either “Bop” or “Boppity Bop Bop Bop.”
  11. Any disputes that take place during the game are quickly resolved through Rock-Paper-Scissors.
  12. Encourage the youth to keep moving quickly with switching places to keep the game moving quickly.
  13. The game continues as time permits or interest fades.

Social Distancing Modifications

Simply instruct everyone to stand at least 6 feet from one another and tell players to rely more on pointing when they are “It” to indicate the player they are talking to.

Game Modifications

Add Motions. For smaller groups, you can increase the complexity and interest in the game by allowing “It” to also give motion directions, such as “stand on one foot” or “make windmills with your arms.” However, adding these kinds of modifications with larger groups would likely be confusing, given the pace of the game.
